Can ChatGPT or Claude Clip Videos and Post Shorts?

On their own, no. Add a clipping tool as an MCP connector and they can run the job, with you confirming each post. Setup for Claude and ChatGPT.

· Everpop

On its own, no. Claude's chat uploads take documents and images, not video, and neither chat app, by itself, posts a finished Short to your YouTube channel. Connect a clipping tool through an MCP connector and the model can drive the run, from finding your video to posting a clip, while you still confirm every publish.

Can ChatGPT or Claude edit a video on its own?

Not into a finished, posted Short. That takes software that renders vertical, captioned clips and holds permission to post to your channel; a connected chat model can direct it.

In Claude, the file is the first wall. Anthropic's upload page lists what a Claude chat accepts: documents such as PDF, DOCX and CSV, and images such as JPEG and PNG. Video formats are not on the list. Alone, a model helps with the thinking: paste a transcript and ask which moments stand on their own; the cutting stays yours.

What changes when you connect a clipping tool?

The model gets hands: it calls the tool, and the tool renders and, where it can, posts. The link is the Model Context Protocol, which Anthropic's connector guide calls "an open standard, created by Anthropic, for AI applications to connect to tools and data". OpenAI's developer mode guide describes ChatGPT's side as full MCP client support for read and write tools.

Model alone Model + clipping connector Clipping tool alone
Cuts the video file Not into a finished, captioned Short Yes: the tool renders, the model calls it Yes
Posts to your channel No If the tool publishes; the chat app can ask you first If the tool publishes
Picks the moments Suggests, from a pasted transcript The tool, steered by your request The tool, or you
Reports results No If the tool does If the tool does

Example: "post the strongest Short from this week's episode" gets you advice, a clip posted once you say yes, or the same clip without a chat.

How do you add a custom connector in Claude?

Paste the server's URL as a custom connector. On individual Pro and Max plans, Anthropic's steps are: go to Customize > Connectors, click "+ Add" then "Add custom connector", name it, add the remote MCP server URL, click "Continue" through the authentication settings, and click "Add".

The same page says custom connectors work on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, with Free limited to one; on Team and Enterprise, an Owner adds the connector first under Organization settings > Connectors. Switch it on per chat from the "+" button, then "Connectors". Anthropic has not verified these servers, so connect ones you trust.

Example: for Everpop, an AI clipping tool that turns your own uploaded videos into published Shorts, the URL is https://everpop.app/api/mcp/mcp, and no key goes in: you sign in with OAuth and approve access in the browser.

How do you connect an MCP server to ChatGPT?

Turn on developer mode, then add the server as an app. OpenAI's guide says developer mode is available to Pro, Plus, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts on the web, and calls it "powerful but dangerous".

The steps on that page: open Settings → Security and login and turn on Developer mode, go to ChatGPT Plugins, select the plus button and create a developer-mode app for your remote MCP server. In a conversation, choose Developer mode from the Plus menu and pick the app. OAuth is a supported sign-in.

Example: no toggle on a company account? OpenAI's testing guide notes that availability can depend on account and workspace policy, so ask your workspace admin.

How do you clip and post a video with Everpop from a chat?

Add https://everpop.app/api/mcp/mcp as the connector, sign in, get the video into your Everpop library, then ask. It needs Pro ($49/mo) or Scale; Free and Starter accounts can connect, but get a 402 instead of a result. Agencies can run the same tools or the REST API from their own stack; Scale covers 10 YouTube channels.

The video must be your own file: MP4, MOV, WEBM, MKV or M4V, up to 32 GB on Pro and Scale. If the chat cannot attach it, add it in the Everpop studio or a linked Google Drive folder; once Everpop has picked it up, the agent finds it with list_videos. An agent that can send files uploads it itself, up to 5 GB in one PUT: request_upload, then finalize_upload once you confirm you hold the rights; a bigger file goes through the browser uploader. The same loop is a REST API with an OpenAPI 3.1 spec, and skill.md walks through every call. A pasted YouTube link will not do: Everpop never downloads from YouTube, and clipping a video with no file returns 422 upload_required.

Worked example: a podcaster on Pro uploads this week's episode in the studio, switches the connector on in Claude and asks for Shorts from the guest's story about quitting a job. The model calls list_videos and checks the episode's latest job; if a render already started, it says so and asks before starting a targeted one, since each new clip run uses one video of the allowance. Otherwise it calls clip_video with the request as the prompt, then get_job until the job leaves PENDING and PROCESSING, and shows the clips with links to watch. The podcaster picks one; the model proposes a title, description and visibility, names the exact connected accounts, and calls publish_clip once they say yes. If it went out as an eligible YouTube Short, list_receipts has its first measured numbers after 48 hours.

YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels and Facebook Reels publish; TikTok gets a draft in the creator's inbox, and going public stays their tap. Measured receipts cover eligible YouTube Shorts: views, average view percentage and subscribers gained at 48 hours and 7 days. The server is also in the official MCP Registry as app.everpop/everpop (registry entry, JSON).

Should an AI agent post to your channel without asking?

Not by default: Everpop's publish_clip needs exact destination ids, the final title, description and visibility, and your explicit confirmation, and is marked destructive so MCP clients can ask first. Hands-free posting needs an autopilot rule you switch on yourself. Clips the agent starts over MCP stay drafts even with Autopilot on, so they still wait for publish_clip.

Both chat apps add their own brake. Anthropic advises saving "Allow always" for servers and tools you trust to run unsupervised; OpenAI's guide says write actions require confirmation by default, and a remembered approval lasts for the rest of that conversation. Example: allow reading tools such as list_videos freely, and keep publish_clip on ask-every-time. Why a human look matters on YouTube is its own topic.

What do you need before the first agent run?

A plan with agent access, your file in the library and a publish step that asks:

  • An Everpop Pro or Scale plan.
  • The connector switched on for this chat.
  • Your own video file in the library.
  • Your posting accounts, connected in Everpop.
  • Room in the allowance: Pro includes 30 videos a month.
  • publish_clip left on ask-every-time.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT post directly to YouTube Shorts?
Not on its own. ChatGPT needs a connected tool that can post for you, such as an MCP app added in developer mode. With Everpop connected, the model can call publish_clip, and the post goes out after you confirm the accounts, title, description and visibility.
Do I need a paid Claude or ChatGPT plan to add a connector?
Anthropic lists custom connectors on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, with Free limited to one. OpenAI lists developer mode for Pro, Plus, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts on the web. Separately, Everpop's connector needs an Everpop Pro or Scale plan.
Can the agent clip a YouTube link I paste into the chat?
No. Everpop never downloads from YouTube, and clipping a video that has no uploaded file returns 422 upload_required. Upload your own file in the studio or through a linked Google Drive folder; once it is in your library, the agent continues from list_videos.
Will the agent publish without asking me?
No. publish_clip needs exact destination ids, the final title, description and visibility, and your explicit confirmation, and it is marked destructive so MCP clients can ask before it runs. Hands-free posting happens through an autopilot rule you switch on yourself. Clips the agent starts over MCP stay drafts even with Autopilot on, so they still wait for publish_clip.
Does it post to TikTok, Instagram and Facebook too?
Instagram Reels and Facebook Reels publish. TikTok receives a ready-to-post draft in the account's inbox, and going public stays your tap in TikTok. Measured 48-hour and 7-day receipts cover eligible YouTube Shorts.
Can I use an API key instead of signing in with OAuth?
Yes, in MCP clients without an OAuth flow and over the REST API. Create a key on the API page of the Everpop studio, read-only or full scope, and send it as an Authorization: Bearer header. Keys never go in a URL, and you can revoke one at any time.

Building an agent?

Everpop's MCP server and REST API let an agent upload the user's own file, clip it, and publish with the user's confirmation.
