YouTube Shorts Shadowban: Real or Not? How to Check

YouTube says it doesn't shadowban channels. Here's how to tell in YouTube Studio whether a Short is limited, swiped past, or just counted differently.

· Everpop

A YouTube Shorts shadowban means YouTube quietly hiding your Shorts. "YouTube doesn't shadowban channels," TeamYouTube wrote in October 2020, repeating it in French in 2025. Strikes arrive by email; limits such as age restrictions show in Studio's Restrictions column. If both are clean and the Short is public, check whether it was shown less, swiped past or counted differently.

Is the YouTube Shorts shadowban real?

YouTube says it does not shadowban channels; what it does document is narrower, such as fewer recommendations for borderline content. The 2020 reply adds that a video "flagged by our systems as potentially violative" may need review "before it shows up in search, etc."

A 2019 YouTube Blog post described "reducing recommendations of borderline content", meaning content that "comes close to — but doesn't quite cross the line of — violating our Community Guidelines". YouTube's help pages for the Restrictions column and Account Status list no label for it.

A removal or strike comes with notice and an appeal route: "Creators are notified when their videos are removed due to policy violations," says How YouTube Works, and they "can appeal if they disagree". That page promises neither when a Short is merely recommended less. Drops you can check fall into three buckets: limited (a documented check shows it), normal (shown less, or shown and swiped) or counted differently (the number changed meaning or is being verified). Anything else is unlabelled (step 7 below).

How do I check if my Shorts are shadowbanned?

To check for a shadowban, open Account Status in the YouTube Studio app (tap your profile picture): it lists strikes and warnings, and a green check "shows that there are no alerts or strikes on your account". In Studio's Content page, the Restrictions column shows "Terms and policies" for any Short YouTube took down, limited or made private.

Symptom Checkable cause Where to check What to do
Uploads blocked, scheduled Shorts went private, or a warning arrived Limited: a Community Guidelines warning or strike Email; Account Status; Studio dashboard and Content tab Read the notice; appeal if wrong
One Short stalled, others fine Limited: taken down, limited or made private Content, Restrictions column Hover over "Terms and policies"; appeal if wrong
One Short won't play, and a blocked-content notification arrived Limited: a Content ID claim (see below) Content, Copyright filter Remove the claimed content or dispute
Missing for younger or signed-out viewers Limited: age restriction: not viewable to anyone "under 18 years of age or signed out" "Age-Restriction" filter, or "Viewable by 18+" under Notices Appeal if mistaken
No recommendations from the start Limited: Private or Unlisted: neither can "show up in search, related videos, and recommendations" Content, under Visibility Switch to Public
Not in the Shorts feed at all Limited: not square or vertical, or over three minutes The exported file Re-export within those limits
Schools or libraries cannot find it Limited: Restricted Mode hides videos that show "potentially adult content" Turn Restricted Mode on and search Allow time if new; if wrongly filtered, send feedback
Shown in feed normal, views low Normal: shown, then swiped (How many chose to view below usual) Analytics, Content tab, "Shorts" chip Rework the opening
Shown in feed falling across several Shorts Normal unless the topic is borderline (above): topic interest, competition or seasonality Same chip, several Shorts Compare runs, not single Shorts
One Short barely shown, every check above clean Normal if Shorts from other channels are "performing even better"; otherwise unlabelled: possibly awaiting review before it "shows up in search, etc." (TeamYouTube, 2020), or borderline content recommended less Shown in feed against your other Shorts; no documented Studio label Judge by your next few Shorts; if borderline, reread the Community Guidelines
Count froze, or views rose while Engaged views stayed flat Counted differently: verification in progress, or the 2025 or 2026 counting change Analytics, Engaged views (Realtime shows only estimates) Wait for confirmed numbers; compare Engaged views

Automatic blocking changed on 24 September 2026: YouTube's UK-English Help page says "new Shorts longer than one minute (but under three minutes) with an active Content ID claim will no longer be automatically blocked and may remain playable on YouTube." On 1 October 2026 the US-English edition of that page still said such Shorts are blocked.

Why did my Shorts suddenly stop getting views?

With nothing flagged, two ordinary explanations fit YouTube's pages: your Shorts were shown less, as topic interest, competition or seasonality shift, or shown and swiped away. Two YouTube Studio numbers tell them apart: Shown in feed, how often your Shorts showed in the Shorts Feed, and How many chose to view, the percentage of times viewers "viewed your Shorts versus swiped away."

YouTube's recommendation help says "An individual video's underperformance does not penalize a channel overall," though "Long-term channel performance can be affected" if a particular viewer consistently stops watching a channel's recommended videos, or viewers increasingly engage with other channels.

A usual "Shown in feed" with a low "How many chose to view" is an opening problem, not a hidden one; why a single Short flops covers the fixes.

Can a view-count change look like a shadowban?

Yes: since 31 March 2025, a Shorts view counts every start or replay with no minimum watch time, and the older metric is now called Engaged views, which YouTube suggests for comparing your Shorts. From 24 August 2026, views are counted "the moment a video starts to play across all formats". The page warns that "YouTube may temporarily slow down, freeze, or change your metric count, and discard low-quality playbacks."

A count that freezes then jumps matches that verification, not a hidden hand; see what counts as a view on Shorts now.

Can reused content or "made for kids" hide my Shorts?

YouTube's pages tie reused content to monetization and spam rules, and "made for kids" to which videos a Short is recommended alongside, not to a silent Shorts penalty. Under the monetization policies, "channels where content feels interchangeable from video to video are not allowed to monetize". Scraped or mass-produced content falls under the spam policy, where YouTube may remove content, email you a warning or strike, or terminate the channel.

Made-for-kids videos "are more likely to be recommended alongside other kids' videos," YouTube says, and designating content accurately is your legal responsibility under COPPA and other applicable laws. If a Short for adults appears under "Set to made for kids (by YouTube)" in the Content page's Made for kids filter, check the setting.

What should I check first when my Shorts views drop?

When Shorts views drop, check YouTube's documented limits first, stopping at the first yes.

  1. Email, warning or strike? Check email and Account Status → limited.
  2. "Terms and policies", an age restriction or a copyright block in the Restrictions column? On desktop, hover over it; in the Studio app, open the video's Details page and select Restrictions → limited. Made for kids and ad-suitability entries show there too; they restrict "certain features" or may limit ads, and a copyright claim may leave a Short playable.
  3. Private, Unlisted, horizontal, over three minutes, or missing from a Restricted Mode search? Not recommendable as a Short, or filtered for some viewers → limited.
  4. Shown in feed normal, How many chose to view low? Rework the opening → normal.
  5. Shown in feed falling across several Shorts? Compare runs → normal, unless the topic is borderline.
  6. Count froze, or comparing across the 2025 or 2026 counting changes? Compare Engaged views → counted differently.
  7. One Short barely shown, steps 1-3 clean? Shorts from other channels may be "performing even better" → normal; otherwise possibly awaiting review or borderline, with no documented label → unlabelled: judge by your next few Shorts.

Comparing runs needs dated numbers. Everpop, an AI clipping tool that turns your own uploaded video into Shorts, reports 48-hour and 7-day receipts for eligible YouTube Shorts published through Everpop: YouTube Analytics views, average view percentage and subscribers gained. On Pro ($49/mo) or Scale, an AI agent can pull the receipts with list_receipts and line up those Shorts side by side.

Frequently asked questions

Can you get shadowbanned on YouTube Shorts without a strike?
Not by YouTube's account: it says it doesn't shadowban channels. But a Short can be limited without a strike. A Short YouTube takes down, limits or makes private shows "Terms and policies" in the Restrictions column, and an age-restricted Short is hidden from viewers "under 18 years of age or signed out". YouTube's 2019 blog also described reducing recommendations of borderline content, with no documented Studio label.
How long does a YouTube Shorts shadowban last?
There is no documented shadowban, so there is no documented duration. Documented penalties do have stated durations: YouTube's strike basics page says a first strike blocks uploading and scheduling for 1 week and the strike stays on the channel for 90 days. That page gives durations for strikes, not for shadowbans, so treat any guide that quotes a fixed shadowban recovery window with suspicion.
Are YouTube shadowban checker tools accurate?
Not for diagnosing a limit: a checker that reads public numbers cannot see Account Status, the Restrictions column, Shown in feed or How many chose to view, which all live inside YouTube Studio. Open those first: together they tell you whether a Short was limited, shown and swiped, or counted differently. YouTube does document one search test, for Restricted Mode: turn it on, then search for the video.
Will a copyright claim hide my Short?
Sometimes. YouTube's three-minute Shorts page, in its UK-English edition, says that starting 24 September 2026, new Shorts longer than one minute (but under three minutes) with an active Content ID claim "will no longer be automatically blocked and may remain playable on YouTube." YouTube says limits are unchanged for Shorts under one minute. If a Short is blocked, YouTube sends a notification of the blocked content, and you can remove the claimed content or file a dispute.
Should I switch off "made for kids" to get more views?
No. YouTube says videos set as made for kids are more likely to be recommended alongside other kids' videos, and that designating your content accurately is your legal responsibility under COPPA and other applicable laws. Set it to match who the video is actually for, never to chase reach.
Can posting too often or reposting get my Shorts shadowbanned?
The YouTube pages on posting cadence and spam describe no silent limit for either. The Shorts discovery page sets no minimum posting cadence ("There is no minimum posting cadence required for your videos to perform well.") and names no maximum either. YouTube's spam policy covers using automated tools to churn out "high volumes of similar content with minimal changes" and re-posting others' material "without adding anything of your own"; for some violations it may remove the content and issue a warning or strike, telling you by email.
