What Aspect Ratio for Shorts? 9:16, 1:1 and 16:9
Shorts are 9:16 at 1080x1920. Square uploads count as Shorts, 16:9 does not. Safe-area pixel margins, worked examples and an export checklist.

Shorts should be 9:16 vertical at 1080×1920. YouTube also accepts square: a video with a square or vertical aspect ratio, up to three minutes long, is categorized as a Short. A 16:9 upload is not. Vertical fills the frame, a centered square leaves about 44% of it empty, and every ratio has to respect the same safe area.
What aspect ratio should a YouTube Short be?
9:16, exported at 1080×1920. That is the shape of the phone screen the Short will be watched on, and YouTube caps Shorts uploads there anyway — the Shorts help page states, "You can upload Short videos with a maximum resolution of 1080p." Exporting a 4K vertical master does not buy you a sharper Short; it buys you a longer upload.
Google's own advertising guidance is blunt about the shape. Its Shorts asset specs say, "Vertical videos, with a 9:16 aspect ratio, are best suited for the Shorts format and deliver better performance compared to landscape assets." Worth reading that for what it is: guidance written about paid assets, not a published measurement of organic Shorts. It still tells you what the surface is built for.
Can Shorts be square (1:1)?
Yes — square uploads become Shorts. YouTube's three-minute Shorts page, under the heading for videos uploaded after October 15, 2024, states: "Any videos uploaded on or after this date with a square or vertical aspect ratio up to three minutes in length will be categorized as Shorts on YouTube." The upload flow repeats the same rule: up to 3 minutes, with a square or vertical aspect ratio.
So "can Shorts be square" and "should Shorts be square" are different questions. The classification says yes. The geometry says think twice.
Put a 1080×1080 square in a 1080×1920 player and it covers 56% of the frame. The remaining 840 pixels of height — 44% of the canvas — are dead space above and below your picture. That space is not neutral: it is exactly where YouTube's own interface sits.
Can a 16:9 video be a Short?
Not as a 16:9 upload. YouTube's guidance for keeping long-form out of the Shorts shelf is to "use a wider aspect ratio such as 16:9 for long-form videos" — width is the signal that says this is not a Short.
What people usually mean by "a 16:9 Short" is a widescreen clip letterboxed inside a 9:16 canvas. That is a legitimate upload, and it is treated as a Short, because the canvas is vertical. But a 1080-wide 16:9 strip is 608 pixels tall — roughly 32% of the frame height. You are shipping a vertical file whose picture occupies a third of it.
In paid inventory Google describes the fallback directly: "If you use horizontal assets, they'll serve with blurred top and bottoms in the vertical Shorts experience." Blur is a repair, not a design.
Where is the YouTube Shorts safe area?
Google publishes a Universal Video Ad Safe Zones sheet with pixel margins for a 1080×1920 vertical frame. Its instruction: "Use these safe areas to ensure that critical elements like logo, product, supers, etc. fall within these areas to avoid risk of elements being covered on certain inventory."

That leaves a safe box of 840 × 960 px — about 39% of the canvas — and it is not centered. It sits high and slightly left: the bottom margin is more than twice the top one, and the right margin four times the left.
Google attaches its own caveat, and so should you: "Device screens vary in size and these safe zones will work for the vast majority of devices. There are no guarantees that some elements may get cut off for some device models."
Two practical consequences:
- Captions belong high, not low. The bottom third is the most contested strip in the frame. If your burned-in captions sit at the classic bottom-sixth position, they are competing with the title and description. Around 55–65% of the frame height keeps them clear and still under the eyeline.
- A centered square fails the safe area twice. Center a 1080×1080 square and its lower edge lands at y=1500, while the unsafe bottom band starts at y=1248. The bottom 252 pixels of your picture — including anything you framed there — sit under the interface.
Why does full-frame vertical beat a letterboxed clip?
Because every argument for letterboxing is an argument about your convenience, and every argument against it is about the viewer's screen.
A 9:16 export gives the subject the whole frame. A letterboxed 16:9 export gives the subject a third of it, then asks a viewer scrolling at speed to read a face a third of the size it could be. Google's video-ads guidance makes the same observation about paid vertical assets: "your vertical video will appear larger than a horizontal video." Nobody has to publish a study for that — it is arithmetic.
The honest limit: nobody outside YouTube can tell you the exact retention delta between a full-frame and a letterboxed Short, and anyone quoting you a precise figure is guessing. What is verifiable is the geometry, the classification rule, and the safe area. Design against those, then measure your own channel.
When is a non-vertical crop the right call?
Sometimes the letterbox is the honest answer:
- Two speakers who both matter. Stacking two 9:16 crops usually beats a shrunken widescreen strip — but a widescreen strip beats cropping one person out of their own punchline.
- Screen recordings, spreadsheets, code, maps. Detail that dies when cropped. Put the 16:9 strip in the upper safe box and use the bottom for context, not for the thing you need read.
- Archive footage you cannot reshoot. A 4:3 or 16:9 source with information at both edges. Fill the canvas with your own backdrop rather than letting the platform blur one for you.

What should you check before you export?
- Canvas 1080×1920, 9:16 — not 4K, not 1:1
- Subject's eyes and face inside the top-to-middle safe box (y 288–1248)
- Captions ending above y≈1248; nothing load-bearing below it
- Right edge kept clear of the last 192 px (the action rail)
- Logo or handle, if any, in the top-left — the cheapest safe corner
- Hook text placed high, where the safe box actually is
